Friends moving back home
Two of our good friends have decided to leave Trolltech and return to their home countries. The first person to leave is Zack. Zack has decided to return to the states after having a hard time adjusting to a new country. He is a vegetarian and has found it hard to find the assortment of meals he was used to in the states. Zack was also used to playing basketball and riding a skateboard with his friends back home. He has tried to get in to a basketball league here, but he says it is not the same. He has toughed it out for about five months, but now has decided to return home.
Our other friend that is leaving is Boris. Boris is from Croatia and has a young daughter. Due to some family issues, Boris has decided to resign from Trolltech and return home. Boris has also only been at Trolltech for a short time, about four months.
I cannot begin to express how much we will miss them. It seems that we are with them at least once a week. We have gone to museums with Boris, and Zack comes over for dinner often. Luckily in the computer profession, there are many conferences and worldwide meetings. I know we will see them at one of these functions, but I will miss them on a day-to-day basis.
There is one good occurrence for Boris leaving, as cruel as it is to say it. Boris had recently leased an apartment and now has to break his lease. We have agreed to take over the lease and move in to his apartment. So we finally have an apartment of our own. It is about a twenty-minute walk from Trolltech’s current location. However when the new office opens on December, it will only be a ten minutes walk. We will be moving next weekend, and we are currently setting up the cable and Internet services.

I like to read your blog now and again. But somehow¸ as a European that has spent almost half a year in the US with his family, there is something that bothers me. Offcourse. We had the advantage that besides our own language we could express ourselves in English.
I would like to illustrate this by Zacks predicament. One of the reasons he can't adjust is that he cannot find the food he is used to. Why? Probably for two reasons. The food isn't the same, and it's much harder to find if you do not speak the language of the country you are in.
Now, that is only a detail - not an unimportant one - that contributes to not being able to integrate. At that time we also had a hard time finding the food products we were used to, but by being able to ask advice from the local people we could adapt our diet. One person was instrumental in that case, a Dutch woman that already lived in the USA for a long time before we arrived.
Now, without wanting to sound patronizing, I would like to give you both some advice: start taking lessons in the Norwegian language as soon as possible and be on the lookout for someone that has migrated from the US at least a couple of years ago...
The company that my husband works for is providing us with language lessons but they do not start for another two months. The company also has lots of people that have moved to Norway from many other countries. I have many times asked people in the office where I can find certain foods. For example, in my blog on Ricotta cheese, I stated how I came to the office to ask people where I could find it.
As far as Zack goes, I do not know all of his reasons for leaving. He has stated many times how he can not find vegetarian alternatives to meat. I know he asked people in the office about where to to go, but I have never heard of him finding anything. I was just expressing my disappointment at our friends departure, and why to my knowledge they are leaving.
We like it here and can find everything we need with little to no help. The company like most, takes it time starting up programs and language classes. It has its own schedule that we have to live with. Zack was just an extreme example how the company's time table did not help a difficult situation.
You stated explicitly that Boris has resigned, but is Zack also leaving Trolltech, or is he merely returning to the States?
